Harmony for Humanity

The purpose of this blog was to keep students, their families, and my friends aware of what is going on in my professional life. As I begin my retirement, the purpose will change.

I grew up in a wonderful town, Harvey, Illinois and had wonderful music teachers; I attended a number of universities, but DePauw and Loyola had the most impact on me. I enjoy finding old friends from New Orleans now, especially after H. Katrina.

Harmony for Humanity Concert a fitting tribute

All students and their families seem to enjoy the Daniel Pearl concert on Thursday. All groups performed well; the Advanced Orchestra really filled the auditorium with a passionate, full sound! Outfits were mostly in place and should be PERFECT for the Holiday pictures. Many thanks goes to Mr. Dan Faulkner, who video taped the performance for the students to review and evaluate. I was tired as ever when it was over, but could not have done it without Mrs. Ledford, Mr. Mosher, and the adminstrators who came to supervise. Mrs. Constantino really appreciated our efforts. Next year, I will do more to alert the local news media about the event.

Good day at the Races

I am always proud of my students' achievements, but they did extremely well at the GMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival held at Awtrey MS. Although a number could not attend (most had told me of conflicts such as SAT testing, ADAP classes for future drivers, etc.), we had a very nice showing. Events such as these go beyond what we as teachers expect of them during the regular school day. Students have to exhibit poise, confidence and a great deal of preparation on their part. I hope they will use their successes today when they apply to the colleges of their choice in the future! Once again, thanks to the parents who trek out to the northern part of our county to bring their students to this event. I will order their medals and return their comment sheets to them on Monday and Tuesday.

Student Successes

All classes are going very well! The 9th graders have really taken off and are enthusiastic about class and all learning activites. I just hope the girls' dresses arrive in time! Yesterday,I found out the company lost our order!
All other groups are playing very well. We had our "walk through" from the county yesterday, and the students were yelling out answers to my questions so enthusiastically that I thought Mrs. Beyke was going to hit the deck! Thanks, students, for showing the rest of the educational world that music, drama, art and all the rest really DO matter.
