Harmony for Humanity

The purpose of this blog was to keep students, their families, and my friends aware of what is going on in my professional life. As I begin my retirement, the purpose will change.

I grew up in a wonderful town, Harvey, Illinois and had wonderful music teachers; I attended a number of universities, but DePauw and Loyola had the most impact on me. I enjoy finding old friends from New Orleans now, especially after H. Katrina.

2012 was a wonderful, great...and last year!

Everything was wonderful this past school year. Concerts were good, students were receptive, all as it should be. However, I realized that I had been doing this for 38 years and it was time to let someone else take over. I was fortunate that Jennifer Floyd took the Orchestra position at McEachern and I know she will be pleased with the school, faculty and students. Many blessings to all as I begin my retirement by playing "Gypsy" in the pit at the Strand Theater for the Atlanta Lyric Theater this summer.

New school year is well underway!

My Mastery Orchestra has taken off! It is so nice to have at least ONE class that meets every day. My 9th graders are all over the place, but talent is there! Advanced is big and my piano classes are good so far. Looking forward to our first concert!

Wonderful spring concert/end of year 2011

Students did a beautiful job in all three orchestras. I look forward to the changes of the new school year 2011-12 with the creation of the Mastery Orchestra class (formerly Chamber Orchestra). Finally I will be able to do some of the things I used to do when I had class every day! Summer camp was also very nice, with over 70 students participating. I still need more McEachern students to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Many thanks for the teachers that assisted in this endeavor.

Festival is in the making!

All three McEachern orchestras have been working very hard preparing their festival selections and their sight reading skills. I was grateful for Ms. Cicco to come over and evaluate our progress while I was off judging the wonderful District 5 Festival in Fulton County. Many thanks go out for the band students for helping us create a Symphony Orchestra for the event. We will host all the county high school orchestras this year and hope they have a good time visiting us!

Wonderful fall and winter concerts!

I am truly impressed with the growth of our McEachern string students. All groups have come a long way since our first notes in August. Our Winter concert with Band students was awesome and I look forward to our Festival performances at LGPE in February. Much hard work is in the future, but I know we will come through on top as always! Many thanks to Julie Albertson for her harp renditions at the concert!

Summer Camp is over once again!

Many thanks to all the teachers and former students who helped make this event a success. We had students from all over the county participate. My only desire is to have more McEachern students SHOW UP! Transportation has become a real issue for some, even in the evening! I will have to work on that one! The final "no concert - concert" went very well, and the A/C in the Auditorium did not let me down, even though the temperature briefly hit three digits in the afternoon!. Now to get rested up for the first day back for teachers, July 29th; I will really miss my convention in San Antonio!

Farewell, Seniors!

Once again, it's time to say good bye to my seniors. They were an especially diverse group, but never ceased wanting to learn and contribute to the progress of the orchestra. Stardust 2010 was also great as usual. We were followed by four bands after the three orchestras performed! Now it is a time of packing, cleaning, and sorting all that left over music.
